In 2022, the modern university research enterprise faces immense promise, complex risks, and a dizzying pace of change that challenges even the most seasoned lawyer or administrator.  Expectations and standards on nearly every front are evolving rapidly – from funder requirements and government action on malign foreign influence to the minefield of cross-border research collaborations and privacy considerations in the use of data in research.  Against this backdrop, the well-informed, considered, and timely advice of counsel has never been so directly tied to the potential for tangible discoveries and innovation at the core of the mission of higher education research institutions. 

This comprehensive CLE Workshop is the essential legal and practice update for college and university counsel and administrators with responsibility for research and technology transfer. Expert presenters will provide need-to-know and practical information to successfully navigate university research and innovation operations and advise clients during this time of rapid change. Workshop sessions will cover a range of important topics such as:

  • Foreign influence and NSPM-33, as well as international research, cross-border collaborations, and foreign researchers;
  • Controversial research, protests, and social activism; 
  • Research misconduct, scholarly authorship issues, toxic lab environments, and related internal and external investigations;
  • Working or negotiating with various stakeholders such as large corporate funders, faculty and startup companies, and internal partners across the research enterprise; and
  • Navigating a range of notable issues such as privacy laws, the use of data in research, clinical trial agreements, and tax-exempt bond issues affecting research.

In addition to panel sessions, registrants can learn from and connect with colleagues through small discussion groups, where attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions, discuss issues, and explore varied approaches in a private setting. 

Who Should Attend? 

This is an intermediate to advanced level program. Presenters will presume attendees have some familiarity and experience with sponsored research, research compliance, international research collaborations, and/or technology transfer or commercialization.  The workshop content will be most useful to college and university counsel and campus administrators with significant responsibilities related to their institutional research enterprise and technology transfer functions.
