FROM TOTAL TERROR TO CAUTIOUS OPTIMISM: AI AND HIGHER EDUCATION LAW

No need to fear – AI is here! Once the purview of fantastical futuristic science fiction, artificial intelligence (AI) is already enrolled at a campus near you, and it shows every sign of being a postsecondary industry disrupter. While international, national, and state regulators and case law struggle to catch up, campus constituents from students to faculty and staff are already experimenting with and leveraging the myriad pedagogical possibilities of AI. College and university counsel can meet this moment by equipping themselves with the latest on emerging jurisprudence, considering tools to integrate AI into their own practice, and by establishing a firm foundational understanding of the risks and opportunities attendant to their clients’ embrace of generative AI in the academy.

Join NACUA for a comprehensive virtual CLE Workshop on all things at the intersection of the law of AI in academe, where sessions will cover topics including:

  • Emerging regulation and caselaw;
  • AI impacts on workforce;
  • Implications for student conduct, research misconduct, and teaching and learning;
  • Contracts;
  • Data privacy;
  • Enrollment management;
  • Accessibility;
  • Integrating AI into OGC;
  • Ethics, and more!

Attendees will have the opportunity to learn from industry leading experts on AI in educational spheres, and to connect with peers from across the country who are already working in this space. Attendees are anticipated to come away from the Workshop prepared to engage with and advise campus clients on issue spotting, effective policymaking, and developing a legal compliance framework surrounding AI in the postsecondary environment.

Who Should Attend?

This is an intermediate to advanced level program. Presenters will presume attendees have some familiarity and experience with higher education law, and at least a basic understanding of generative AI. The Workshop content will be most useful to postsecondary counsel and campus administrators with responsibilities across the college and university enterprise. Those seeking an initial introduction to the law of AI in higher education are encouraged to register for NACUA’s 2025 Virtual Winter Pre-Workshop “What *is* Artificial Intelligence and why should I care?” which is available to Workshop attendees for a discounted rate.
